Electronic Courtrooms

Developments in courtroom technology are rapidly changing the way court proceedings used to be. Remote testimony by video conferencing, digital evidence presentations, computer monitors for judges, jurors, witnesses, counselors, and a wireless technology that allows the counselor to be connected to the office through Internet, are installations in many courtrooms.

Requirements of increased efficiency and time savings, while reducing costs in courts, have contributed to the increasing awareness of the need of computer technology in court proceedings.

Electronic courtrooms projects have been developed in Federal and State Courts in the United States. The most famous is the Courtroom 21, a joint project including the National Center for State Courts.

But also outside the United States projects have been established and Globalcourts provides you with links to some courts worldwide with electronic courtrooms.

Cyber Courts

Cybercourts or virtual courts, are courts resolving disputes through electronic communications with the lawyers and parties without their physical appearance in a traditional courtroom, and allow the conducting of court proceedings electronically. And at the discretion of the judge, pursuant to the court rules, all proceedings of the cyber courts are open to the public on the Internet

Projects on Cybercourts have been established in United States, in Michigan, North Carolina and Delaware, with Louisiana and California preparing to deploy cybercourts.
